The goal of this course is to promote reliable, high quality testing and enhance patient safety by explaining steps of the waived testing process and to provide the learner with additional resources to assist on the job. By taking this course, the learner will be able to:

READY?
1. Identify the basic requirements for performing waived testing.
2. Identify at least three good laboratory practices for preparing the laboratory or testing site to produce high quality test results.


SET?
1. Select at least two good laboratory practices that assure the right sample type is obtained from the correct patient.
2. Identify patient samples that are labeled correctly.


TEST!
1. Identify at least two good laboratory practices for testing. 2. Identify at least two good laboratory practices for recording and reporting results.


Program Description The training will help to assure that testing personnel have the basic training necessary to safely and accurately perform patient testing waived under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988. After viewing this training module, participants will understand that waived testing can produce inaccurate results and that these results could adversely impact patients. There are many things they can do, however, to minimize the risk of inaccurate testing. The learning objectives itemize several specific things that the participant will be able to do as a result of this training.

TARGET AUDIENCE: The target audience are individuals who perform testing in waived testing sites (mainly physician offices, nursing facilities, home health agencies, clinics, pharmacies and others) throughout the United States. They include a variety of individuals, primarily those who do not have formal laboratory training. These most frequently include:

- Nurses, (LPN, RN, NP, Midwife)
- Medical assistants, (MA)
- Physicians, (MD, DO, DPM, DDS)
- High school graduates or individuals with GED
- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), paramedics
- Clinical nursing assistants (CNA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Assistant (PCA), State Tested Nurse Aid (STNA) or Nursing Assistant-Registered (NA/R)
- Pharmacist
- Physician assistants, (PA)
- Phlebotomists or others
